Time is Ticking....

Lately the concept of time has been on my mind. 

Tell me if this rings true for you… You’re trying to fit everything into your life. There’s work, maybe a side hustle, kids, fur babies, your friends and family. You want time for travel and adventures, time for yourself, time to pursue your passions, time for exercise and time just to be. 

Of course, no matter who you are, what your business card says, how much money or influence or power you have, TIME is the level playing field. We all have the same amount of it each day. 

Time is an unrenewable resource. 

• If I give you a material object, for example my earrings, I can go and buy another pair.  

• If I give you money, I can go and make more. 

• But if I give you an hour of my time, I can never get that hour back. It’s gone forever. Poof – up in smoke. 

This reminds me of the 2011 movie “In Time” starring Justin Timberlake. In the movie, there’s the concept of time as the only currency. Everyone has a digital clock on their forearms, clicking off the years, months, days hours and minutes they have left to live. When it gets to 0:00 – your time is up! 

Consider this, as a leader, if you hold a 2 hour meeting with your team of 10, that’s 20 hours of their time, and 2 hours of your time, so all you’ve just used up 22 hours. The question to ask yourself is, what did you get in return for those 22 hours? Did you get a high return on your investment? Was there a return of energy, engagement, well-being, ideas, money, commitment, profit...? 

I believe you need to be conscious of 2 things: 

1. Giving away your time to others. Consider who or what you are giving your time to and why? What’s the return? 

2. Taking away time from others. Consider when you call that meeting – how much time do you need? Who do you want in the room and why? What is the intended outcome?  

Even though we may not have digital clocks on our forearms, I don’t think we need to be reminded that our life clock is counting down.
